Callingwood Lymburn Community Playschool June 2021 Message from the Committee Lead Wow, it’s hard to believe that we are down to the last few weeks of playschool! A huge thank you to teachers Cathey, Jeni, Lisa and both the CLCL and CLCP Parent Committee. With everyone’s hard work and dedication behind the scenes our children were able to have an amazing year! While playschool is ending for some of the kids, they are also about to start their next journey into kindergarten in the fall. With that, some of the CLCP Parent Committee is going to be saying farewell to some of its members so please contact me if you are interested in taking on a role. Wishing you all a happy and healthy summer! Thank you, Lisa Turgeon Committee Lead 2020/2021 Reminder for returning parents from CLCL: If you have a child who will be starting or returning for the 2021/2022 playschool season please be sure that you have sent in their “new” PAD form and either a void cheque or bank direct debit for to clcpadmin@callingwoodlymburn.com. First of all, let me say thank-you for being such wonderful, supportive parents. Thank-you for entrusting your children to a classroom that you have not been able to enter and a teacher that you only get to see at the door. I can only imagine how hard this has been. Thank-you for participating in dress up days, Star of the Week, Fundraisers, and preparing crafts, playdough, doing laundry and so much more. Not only is this a very special group of children but you are a very special group of parents. June will bring lots of fun to wrap up the school year! Our class will spend lots of time playing outside, enjoying the playground and nice weather, and enjoying the friends that have been made. Our themes are camping, zoo, dads and summer. On Friday, June 4th , we will do outside and play with water (games, art, etc). There is a chance we may get wet so please bring a towel. This day is very weather dependent so if it is too cool we will do some alternate activities. While we learn about zoo animals, we will go on a virtual zoo field trip on June 9th (I wish we were actually going to the zoo, but we will make this a great day). On Monday, June 14th , the class will celebrate summer birthdays with games and cupcakes outside (Teacher Cathey will provide). If your child has a summer birthday, this will be a special day for them with choosing from the birthday box. June 18th is our last day of school. We will have a year end party/celebration/graduation. I will send out details by Friday, June 11th. I would like to include our parents, but I am waiting until closer to the date to see what the restrictions are. But whatever we will do, it will be lots of fun! The children took beautiful Graduation pictures. I will be sending home some pictures on the last day and posting them on our google classroom pictures so you can print them out. As well, I will be sending home a group picture that was taken by our photographer way back in November. Not all of our class had joined us yet, so some students and teachers are missing. A tradition at CLCP is to put together a yearbook of our special memories (which all of our class is represented in!). Thank-you Jessie for putting together our yearbooks. If you are interested in a yearbook, please let Jessie know by June 4th. Price for the yearbook is $20 and can be given to Jessie or Teacher Cathey. They are wonderful memories of your child’s adventure in preschool. It is with bittersweet emotions that we end our year…I truly have come to love your children and will miss them greatly. Yet, I am so excited for all that is in store for them in the days and years to come. Thank-you for a beautiful year. Have a wonderful summer and don’t forget to come back and visit! I hope you have all had a great experience with Playschool. It has been such a special time for me getting to know all your wonderful children. Thank you for trusting me and the whole team behind Callingwood-Lymburn Playschool. It really does take a village. I hope to see all of you next year and for those of you moving on to kindergarten I wish you all the best, I know you will be amazing. June will be packed with celebrations, as much as we can, we have all the birthdays that we have missed this year or being held during the summer. I think birthdays are worth celebrating we sing the birthday song; they get to pick a small gift and most important wear the birthday crown! You may bring a special store bought, pre-wrapped treat to share at the end of class, outside of the school if you choose but it is not necessary. Teddy Bear Picnic: we will have our snack outside, read a book and play a game on our adventure. We will stay on school grounds but may try out a new location. For the End of the Year Celebration, I am hoping that parent(s) and family members would meet us in the park on Thursday, June 17 at 10:45 for a small celebration of the year together. It will follow any and all of the Covid protocols, but I am just not sure what those will be yet. I am so proud of all the students and families this year. It has not been an easy year for anyone. I am so impressed with everyone’s willingness to accept all the changes and it has allowed the students to grow and learn so much. Have fun this summer, enjoy the outdoors and time together. Callingwood Lymburn Community Playschool May 2021 Message from the Committee Lead It’s hard to believe we are in our final months of the school year! A huge thank you to everyone for making it so successful despite all of the covid challenges. A reminder that online registration for next year is open. If you are returning next year or know of anyone who has a child that has recently turned 3 or 4 and would enjoy our program, please refer them to the sites below and help us spread the word about our amazing playschool! Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our plant fundraiser with Growing Smiles. The deadline to order is May 4. Call for volunteers for 2021/2022 For returning families, we are currently looking for a secretary and 4am class rep for next year. I cannot believe I am writing the newsletter article for May already. Although this year has been one of the most challenging we have all faced, this group of students is and will always be one of the most special groups I have taught. I am not ready for our year to be done! So, I will try and squeeze out as much fun and learning as I can in the next 2 months (plus a couple of extra letters a week…where has the time gone?). Our themes this month will be Spring, Bugs and some special focus on our Moms. Gardening, kites, flowers, butterflies, ladybugs, a picnic, special songs and gifts for moms, and lots of outside time – bring on May! Preschool really is the best place to learn…. I am so excited about a nature/science opportunity we have planned this month. We are having a group of caterpillars arrive in our class on May 21st, that we will have the wonderful opportunity to watch turn into butterflies, over a few weeks. How much fun will it be to watch them change and then release our butterflies in June! As well, we will try to go outside at least 2 times a week (aiming for Monday and Fridays) so please dress for the weather. On the last day of May, we will go outside for most of the day and do many activities outside, including having our snack, and have a little picnic. Just a couple other dates to highlight, include May 7 th , which we will send home our special presents for our moms and I will record a special presentation we will perform during class on Mother’s Day (this will be posted on our Google Drive – if you need the link, please let me know). Then on Wednesday, May 12 th we are going to take a special picture with Graduation caps and a special backdrop. I will be printing some out and also posting them on our Google Drive – they are so cute and help us to celebrate your child’s time in playschool. And one other date to mark on your calendars is the pick up date for the flowers you have ordered. Please meet Jessie over at the Callingwood Lymburn Community Hall at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 19 th . Thank-you so much for supporting our playschool! I want you to know I am so proud of how your children are doing – their names are coming, they can identify many letters and are starting to know the sounds the letters make, they are super stars in counting and math activities, they play so well together and I would say, they are ready for kindergarten. If there is anything that I think we need to work on before our precious time at playschool is done, I will contact you. However, I had considered failing them all so I could keep them one more year! I really will miss them. So thankful to be your teacher, Teacher Cathey Teacher Cathey May 2021 M/W/F Class Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Theme: Spring, We Love our Moms! April was so much fun with everyone and we have another new student, Aila! Kids excelled at the five senses unit, I hope you learned a little bit about it from the scientists and enjoyed the popcorn taste test. Students enjoyed beach day, and the ice cream stand in class. Students continue to grow and are becoming so independent. April showers bring May Flowers! We are preparing for a great month outdoors! We will be studying gardens and bugs, flowers and plants. As the students are growing and becoming more and more ready for the next steps, whether its kindergarten or 4 year old playschool. We are progressing with our writing, reading and math skills. Many of the skills are learnt through play, we make lines and shapes when coloring or in our writing journals. Math we are sorting and counting bugs with our spring stew. Reading, singing and nursery rhymes are getting us closer to reading. Some students are writing their names, or getting close. Crafts, playdough and sensory tables are strengthening our hands and arms for writing as well as our hand eye coordination. We are getting closer to the end of the year and it’s time to start thinking about next year for these munchkins. Some will be continuing on into the four-year-old class (hopefully with us) and some will be going on to kindergarten (exciting!). I am becoming quite attached to this group of children. You don’t go through a pandemic with a class and not count them as special! Thank-you so much for all you do and continue to do to support our class. I loved our career day – the kids looked incredible and I loved hearing about all of their future plans. April will bring a couple of really fun themes to our room – Sea life and Farm life. Since we can’t go on real field trips this year, I am going to try and bring the Ocean and Farm to them. Fingers crossed, our class will be getting a new pet – a pet fish. This is going to be a surprise for the children to see when they return to school following Spring Break. “Twinkle” the fish, will help us learn about life under the sea and teach the kids some responsibility, as we will take turns feeding the fish each day. To wrap up the Ocean Theme, we will celebrate with a Beach Day on Friday, April 16th . Please send your kiddos in shorts (if weather permits), and bring a beach towel (we will sit on these at circle time and do a couple fun games using our towels). Our next theme will be “Down on the Farm.” Farm life is such a great theme as we learn about how farms grow our food and have animals that give us things like eggs and milk. Since we do not have access to the gym, I would like us to start going outside everyday. We will go outside at about 10:50, sometimes playing at the park, sometimes playing in the field and sometimes playing on the courtyard. I will gather the children at 11:10 to line up and gather our backpacks. If you arrive early, please feel free to enjoy watching them play. I will tell the kiddos they can wave at you, but they need to stay with the class until we get our backpacks and Teacher Cathey dismisses them. Of course, if it is raining, (or heaven forbid, some other kind of precipitation), we will stay inside and do movement activities and I will dismiss them as usual. We have been cutting, practicing our names, and learning some new songs and nursery rhymes. In April, we will dive into the Ocean theme and get out to the Farm. We will also be learning all about our 5 senses, through some fun experiments, a listening walk, and even a special take home activity. We started going outside more as the weather cooperated; as the seasons change it is a great time for the students to play outside, observe the changes, build strength, and connections with their friends. It’s also a great time to catch up with me and I love to visit with the families and answer any questions you may have. Our first theme will be Community Helpers. We will have fun exploring a variety of careers – dentists, fire fighters, police officers….even the classroom will undergo some transformations to support all the learning that will go on. We will have a “career day” on March 10th . Please have your child dress up in a career they would like to do when they grow up. It is so amazing to watch these precious children dream about their futures! We will have a couple fun holiday celebrations to guide our learning in March. On March 17th , we will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Please dress your child in Green this day. Then we will have fun getting ready for Easter! Chicks, Bunnies, Eggs….such a great theme. On Friday, March 26th , we will have an Easter Party and Easter Egg Hunt. Please pack a fun snack for your kiddos this day (and kudos to you, parents, for your effort for putting together such amazing snacks for party days – you are incredible!). I just wanted to let you know about our literacy activities and physical activities. We are doing our best to learn our letters and print our names. Some days, we just have so much to do, we can not seem to get it all in. I usually have a little sheet for the kids to work on. If we do not get to it, I will send it home. If you can work on this with them, that would be great. I have told the kids that it is their “homework.” Of course, please do not feel pressure to complete this activity. As we prepare for kindergarten, the more the children can identify their letters, the more prepared they will be. Also, I will be sending home some activities to help them with writing their names. Some can already write their names, and some still need help – do not worry….there is still lots of time for them to acquire this skill (some just love practicing writing and others would rather do their learning by building blocks or acting out a story!). Also, at this time, the gym is still closed to us due to Covid. However, I know how important physical activity is, so I make sure we do some everyday. Sometimes this will be outside and sometimes it will be some movement and music activities in the classroom. These amazing kids have been so flexible – you should be very proud! And I just wanted to thank-you so much for all of your participation in the Heartfelt helpers activity. The children are so proud of their accomplishments! I hope it was fun to see them hard at work being good helpers! I just love these kids so much – all 18 of them! Wow, what a fun month of Dinosaurs, Valentines and a birthday! I am so excited for another month of exploration, learning and play. This month we will be diving into community helpers (so keep a watch out for those helpers around the neighbourhood), St Patrick’s Day and Easter. We will be exploring colors through art and science. We will be working on recognizing and writing our names. You may notice our crafts are not “perfect” – I am really wanting the students to do as much of the work as they can on their own, so they get the most benefit from our crafts and projects. We have moved from a class of 6 to a class of 9! It is wonderful that we are gaining new friends and the students are adjusting like pros. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions at the school we are currently not able to access the gym. I will have the students moving as much as we can in the class, but I would also like to take them outside. March is tricky with the weather, but it will likely be better than February, so I have marked a few dates on the calendar for outside time. However, if we get good weather, I will take them outside anytime I can. I will put a sign on the door for pick up if we are at the park. Please check in with me before taking your child. Lastly, I would love to get to know all the families over the next 4 months. You are all so important to the students and to the school community. Callingwood Lymburn Community Playschool February 2021 Message from the Committee Lead It’s hard to believe we are heading into our second semester already. I’m looking forward to seeing all the fun activities the teachers have planned this month. I’d like to officially welcome Teacher Jeni as the new 3 year old teacher who will be replacing Teacher Kelsey as she takes on an exciting new role. We wish you all the best Teacher Kelsey, you will be greatly missed! A reminder that as the temperatures get colder and the roads get icier, please ensure you are parking safely and not parking in the teacher’s lot. The committee is currently working on next year’s registration plan and we expect to have updates out to everyone shortly. Take and stay warm, Lisa Turgeon

Message From The Community League We hope everyone has settled into the next half of the school year. As mentioned in our email announcement, teacher Kelsey has accepted a teaching position at Edmonton Public Schools and as of February, teacher Jeni will be our lead Tuesday/Thursday teacher. We have had some new enrollees in our classes and as a result the Monday/Wednesday/Friday class is at its maximum. There is space in the Tuesday/Thursday program so if you know of anyone who is interested please let them know that this will be the last month for any new registrations. Contact clcpadmin@callingwoodlymburn.com for any registration information. CLCL has brought on a substitute teacher/assistant to help with the classes should the teachers require any time off. Please welcome Tafseer Sayeda. She will be orientating in the Monday/Wednesday/Friday class for the next few weeks. We will have her introduce herself in next month’s newsletter. Please note that Caesar’s bingo is still closed so there is no bingo volunteering at this time. We also have no information on the upcoming outdoor soccer season. Have a great February. Stay warm and safe. Kathy Kammermayer

CLCL President Teacher Kelsey’s Farewell Note Happy February Everyone! As you probably already know, I have accepted a full time Grade 2 teaching position with Edmonton Public Schools, starting on February 2nd. Although I am thrilled to be embarking on a new journey, I will miss teaching your little ones so much! As a brand new teacher, I could not have asked for a better start to my teaching career. Parents, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child’s very first school experience, it has been a wonderful and rewarding five months for me. Watching your children learn and grow in our Playschool is so special, and will stick with me forever. I know Teacher Jeni will step into my position seamlessly and do so many amazing things with the 3’s! Although I am going to think about the kids like crazy when I leave, I really hope to come visit the classroom at some point before the school year wraps up! Wishing you all the best for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year! Love. Teacher Kelsey

Hello and Happy February! February is one of my favourite months…I love teaching about showing love and kindness, how to be a good friend, decorating our room with hearts and, of course, learning about dinosaurs! It is going to be a lot of fun! On Friday, February 5th , I will be providing the children with 5 cut out hearts (“Heartfelt Helpers”) to take home. When your child helps out around the house (ex/ making their bed, feeding a pet, setting the table, helping out with younger siblings, etc.), you can print their accomplishment on the heart along with their name. They can then bring the heart back to school and put it on our “Heartfelt Helpers” tree. I will try and take pictures of it, because it always blesses my heart to see the helpful activities our kids have been involved in. Our Valentine’s Party will be on Friday, February 12th during regular class time. If possible, have your child dress in red or pink. Please send it a special snack for your child this day (how I wish I could provide it -but the health restrictions still do not allow us to hand out snacks to the kids). The good news is, we can still bring Valentine’s in for our friends! Please bring in your Valentine’s on Monday, Feb 8th or Wednesday, Feb. 10th . We will put our Valentine’s in our friends’ Valentine Holders on Wed, Feb. 10th . I will isolate the Valentine’s and they will be sent home on Fri., Feb. 12th . I will be sending home a class list this week so the children can start making their valentines at home (if you wish to participate). This is a great activity to have the children practice writing their names. If they have not yet mastered their names, they are wonderful “tracers.” If you write their names in highlighter (or a light coloured marker), they have been practicing “tracing” over top of it. And just a few housekeeping items….as your children may have mentioned, we have not been able to go to the gym for the past few weeks. Due to some recent AHS restrictions, the gym is not available to us and there is no date as to when we may be able to start using it again. I am so proud of the kids as they have shared their disappointment with me, but have been able to adjust. I am planning on making sure we get some physical activity each day, by going outside or a special music/movement/game in the classroom. As well, “Star of the Week” continues this month. Thanks to the children for being so patient and waiting their turn. Please check the calendar for your child’s week. Happy Family Day on Monday, February 15th! Please remember there is no school on that day. I hope you are able to enjoy time with your family! Please note that we follow the Edmonton Public School calendar and there will be no school on Monday, February 1st , as it is a PD Day (which will allow us to wash toys and do the toy changeover) and on Friday, February 26th for Teacher’s Convention. One last thing…registration for Kindergarten for Edmonton Public starts on February 2nd . Can you believe it is time to start thinking about Kindergarten? The online registration process can be found on the Edmonton Public School Board website. We will be working very hard in the next few months to get them Kindergarten ready…and I will be enjoying every moment I have with them before our time is over (us teachers get so attached!). Have a wonderful month! Teacher Cathey

This month we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day, our party will be February 11 (Radek’s Birthday) but we need to distribute the cards February 9 so if you can send them then that would be fabulous. For this party we cannot have group food but please send something ‘fun’ in their snack. We will be crafting, moving, and shaking all things Valentines. It is a great learning opportunity to have kids help with their Valentine’s day cards with either printing their own names on cards, putting them in envelopes, putting stickers on them etc. We have 6 students in our class: Radek Dominik Selin Harper Summer Keltie After Family Day we will explore Dinosaurs! So much fun, we will explore all kinds of habitats, dinosaurs and even do a dinosaur dig. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions at the school we are currently not able to access the gym. I will have the students moving as much as we can in the class, but I would also like to take them outside. February is tricky with the weather, so I have marked a few dates on the calendar for outside time. If the weather is above -10 we will give it a go. Please send snow pants, mitts, hats, boots and jackets on those days. Lastly, I would love to get to know all the families over the next 5 months. Callingwood Lymburn Community Playschool January 2021 Message from the Committee Lead Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you all had a quiet and relaxing holiday and are looking forward to school resuming next week. A big thank you to our amazing teachers, committee, parents and students for making everything run as smoothly as possible so far. I’d like to welcome teacher Jeni to our school who is currently supporting both classes and has been a wonderful contribution to the classroom. With the current situation registration for the 2021/2022 school year will be delayed, we will send out updates when we have everything in place. We will continue to take new registrations for this current year until the end of January so please spread the word about our great playschool! Take care and be safe, Lisa Turgeon

Message From The Community League Happy New Years! We hope that you all had a good holiday season. Given the current status of the pandemic, CLCL will continue to not volunteer at Caesars Bingo. We are looking into a new possibility of helping with virtual bingos but need to get more information to ensure your safety. Have a good second half of the playschool year. We should have more information on the outdoor soccer season soon once EMSA West finalizes the program. Kathy Kammermayer CLCL President

Mon/Wed/Fri News Happy New Year! I hope your family had a wonderful holiday together. Thank-you so much for the generous, and thoughtful gifts I received at Christmas. It truly is my privilege and joy to be teaching your children! 2021 will start off with lots of fun in our classroom! January is a fun month to celebrate all things winter – snowmen, icicles, mittens, penguins, hot chocolate…so many great things about this season. To keep with the winter theme, Jan. 20th is National Penguin Day s0 we will dress in black and white and learn all about penguins. Then on Jan. 29th we will go outside and play in the snow! Please send your child with their snow pants, gloves, hats and boots. If the weather is below -15 we will not go outside and reschedule. As we work towards readiness for Kindergarten, we are going to start focusing on writing our names and be introduced to a letter of the week. We will start off with one letter a week and eventually work on 2 letters a week. There will be interesting activities based on this letter in the classroom and we will practice writing this letter in some fun ways. To help supplement our learning, ask your child to help you find the letter of the week when you are reading together or out at the store. These kiddos are so smart – just keep encouraging them and they will shine! We have also had one more staffing change in our classroom. We have hired Teacher Jeni, who is a certified B. Ed Teacher, and she is wonderful! Jeni will be our substitute for our Playschool but is also able to come and be an assistant each day. What a difference it has made having myself, Teacher Lisa and Teacher Jeni each day! Jeni is fantastic with the children and has some wonderful ideas. We are so blessed to have her join our team! Here’s to a new start, and a better year. May 2021 be amazing! So thankful to be your teacher, Teacher Cathey

Tuesday/Thursday Tidbits Happy New Year! The year 2020 was certainly an unpredictable year full of unprecedented challenges, but we have successfully made it and learned a lot along the way. As we embrace a new year, I am hopeful for a better and brighter 2021! I was very sad I was unable to be in class for the last week before break, but I am extremely grateful that teacher Jeni was able to step in and teach the kiddos! She has been such a wonderful addition to our Playschool team and we are so happy to have her as our new substitute and assistant teacher. I truly cannot wait to see you again on January 12th and hear all of the little stories the 3’s will have to share! Our themes for the month will be: Winter, Winter Animals, and Snowmen! January is a fun month in Playschool, it is all about the Winter season, getting back into a routine, and reuniting with our friends and teachers after a long and well deserved break. To match the Winter theme of January, we will have a “Penguin Day” on Tuesday January 19th, where we will dress in black & white, create a fun craft, and learn all about penguins! Then on Thursday January 28th, we are going to have a “Snow Day”. Please send your child to school with a jacket, snow pants, hat, mitts, boots, etc so that they are prepared to play in the snow (please note that we will reschedule if the weather is below -15). As mentioned in the December newsletter: In January, we will be starting Star of the Week in our classroom. When your child is Star of the Week, please have them bring in their completed “All About Me” poster and a special item for show and tell for Tuesday and Thursday (1 show and tell item for each day). The week before your child is the star, the poster and instructions will be sent home. When your child is star student, I will make sure I record their show and tell presentation, so you can watch them shine virtually! *Please note that the January calendar will indicate who is Star of the Week. The order is alphabetical by last name and will continue until everybody has had a turn. I also want to quickly remind you that a google folder has been created for the teachers to share photos/videos with you from our class. I will make sure I update this folder regularly to keep you up to date with what is going on in our wonderful Playschool class! Thank you very much to Lisa Turgeon for sending out this link. December 2020

Message from the Committee Lead

It’s finally here again, the most wonderful time of year, especially for families with little ones running around.  Although it will look different this year, I hope everyone has some time to relax and enjoy.  Thanks to everyone who purchased their child’s art work from Art Cards by Kids, every little bit helps the playschool operate during this time.

With winter weather comes questions around class cancellations. Please be advised that classes will be cancelled if the temperature is -35°Celsius or below. For any other situations compromising safety, such as heavy snowfall with no road clearance, you will be notified by your class representative if classes will be cancelled. Cancelled classes will not be made up.

As well, a reminder to mind speed limits and always watch for pedestrians.

Wishing you all a happy,

safe and fun filled holiday.

CLCL Bingos

With the restrictions imposed by Jason Kenney on November 24th, the CLCL Board has decided to not provide volunteers for the December and January bingos. It was felt that the safety of our volunteers was most important.

What does this mean for you? For any family that signed up to work the Dec 30th, Jan 9th and Jan 17th bingos, when CLCL receives their new dates for 2021, you will be contacted to choose a new bingo date.

Have a wonderful Christmas and best wishes in the new year!

Mon/Wed/Fri News

It truly is the most wonderful time of the year in our preschool class!  The kiddos have been excited to celebrate Christmas for many weeks and the time has finally come.   Although December is going to look a little different this year – to a preschooler it is still magical!

Even in the midst of restrictions, December is still going to be a fun, busy month!  We are going to have Green day (Dec. 7) and Red Day (Dec. 16).  Please dress your child in these colours and try to pack a festive snack in the colour of the day.  I will also spend some time talking about Christmas is not just about getting, that it is about giving too.  In honour of this, we will have “Christmas Giving Day” on Dec. 9th.  Please send a donation for the Food Bank with your child this day.

On December 18th, we will be having our Christmas Party!   We will make a special craft, play extra fun games in the gym, and sing our songs for our parents – which I will record and get out to you later that day.   Please send a special snack with your child that day.  You did such a wonderful job at Halloween – as I looked at the snacks, it felt like a party!  Thank-you for making this accommodation during this tricky time.

Just a couple of housekeeping items – Thank-you to all who have helped with classroom support – playdough, laundry and craft prep.  You have done a wonderful job and I am very thankful for your help!  Please check to see when your child is Star of the Week.  I will try and send home the poster one week before their turn.   I have been videotaping one of their show and tell times and am working on emailing these out (I am behind but will try and catch up asap).   And just a reminder about snack – please remember we are a nut free/peanut free school.  A few of the students in our class have a peanut allergy so please do not pack nuts or peanuts/peanut butter in your child’s snack.  You pack the most amazing snacks – I am so impressed!  Please remember this is just snack time… sometimes the snacks are so big the children spend quite a bit of time eating.  If possible, please limit your snack to around 2-3 items.   And finally, we have had a staffing change in our classroom.  Teacher Kelsey has accepted a substitute teaching job with the Catholic School Board and will no longer be offering classroom support on Monday/Wednesday/Friday.  Teacher Lisa has been filling the role of classroom assistant and is doing a wonderful job!  We are looking for a substitute teacher for our playschool so if you know of anyone interested in a helping with this please let us know (must have a B.Ed or a Level 2 in ChildCare).

May your December be filled with special memories and joy-filled family time.  I wish you and your precious family a wonderful Christmas and all the best in the New Year!

Tuesday/Thursday Tidbits

Happy December parents! Time sure flies by when you are having fun learning and exploring in playschool. December will be a month filled with energy and excitement as we celebrate Christmas and the holiday season, a very magical time for our little ones! I already have so many special things planned for the three year old class that I cannot wait to share with you. Don’t forget to review the December calendar for special days in our classroom!

On December 17th, we will have our Christmas Party! Unfortunately, due to the current situation, we are unable to hold this party in the community hall with our families, so it will be taking place in the classroom (regular class hours). The party will run similar to our Halloween party, with games, crafts, and other themed activities for the kids to enjoy! I am so sad that we cannot have a Christmas concert for our families this year, but I will make sure I take lots of pictures and record the kids singing their Christmas songs that they have been practicing. This way, you can share this special moment with your children and loved ones virtually. More details to follow for our Christmas party!

In January, we will be starting Star of the Week in our classroom. When your child is Star of the Week, please have them bring in their completed “All About Me” poster and a special item for show and tell for Tuesday and Thursday (1 show and tell item for each day). The week before your child is the star, the poster and instructions will be sent home. When your child is the star student, I will make sure I record their show and tell presentation, so you can watch them shine virtually!

*Please note that the January calendar will indicate who is Star of the Week for each week, and I promise everybody will get their turn to shine!

Thank you again for the support that you have given the playschool through these unprecedented times; it is truly appreciated! I continue to be amazed by your children, and I have seen SO many wonderful changes and growth in just three months!

I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas & all the best in the New Year,

Teacher Kelsey

Beginning this November, the teachers will start checking the doors at 8:45am to ensure no one is waiting for an extended period of time in the cold.

I’d like to thank all of the families for being flexible and adapting to the changes and for the support with the volunteer duties this year.  Also, a big thank you to our amazing teachers and committee parents for their time and commitment to keep the playschool running smoothly.

Thank you, Lisa Turgeon

Mon/Wed/Fri News

Can you believe it is November already?    The time seems to be just flying by.  Our class has truly adjusted well and we are learning so much and having a great time.  I can’t wait to see what November brings!   Our themes this month will be Space, Bears and the start of Christmas.  On November 27th, we will have one of my favourite days – “Pajama Day.”  I’m looking forward to wearing my pjs to work!

As the weather has turned colder, getting our winter gear on and off has proven to be an interesting activity.  The kids are really doing their best (as are the teachers…) and it can be overwhelming.   We continue to try and work on how to make this easier and have come up with a few more ideas.  I would like to ask if our students could leave their indoor shoes at school.  They each have their own bin (in the past we have shared), and it would be easy to leave the shoes in the bin.  Another thing that would be helpful is if you could practice putting on and taking off their outside clothes.  With 14 little ones and 2 teachers, we are outnumbered!  The more independent they are, the smoother our arrival and departure will become.

Our playschool will be participating in a Christmas Card Fundraiser this year.  On November 2nd, we will be creating a special Christmas picture that will be made into a Christmas Card.  Later in the month, you will receive a sample of this artwork and given the chance to order these cards.  They make for a very special card to send out to family and friends plus some of the proceeds are returned to the playschool.

Thank-you so much for being willing to help with our volunteer roles in lieu of our toy cleanings.  You have been so flexible and helpful and it is truly appreciated.  Thank-you for all your help in making our class such a wonderful place to be!

October 26, 2020

Dear Parents,

We are doing a Christmas Card Fundraiser this year called “Art Cards by Kids.”  This week we will create some Christmas images during class that would make for a very cute Christmas Card!  I will send in the artwork on Nov. 4th to Art Cards by Kids and you will receive a sample card around the 20th of November.    At this time, you may choose to order the card or not place an order – it is not mandatory in any way.  The cards start at about $2/card but the more you order, the less expensive each one is.  Our school benefits from each order that is placed.  Please check out their website at www.artcardsbykids.com.

After your order is placed, a week after we receive the sample cards, it takes about 5-10 days to receive the cards.  Our goal is to have the completed cards out to our families by Dec. 4th.  If you would like your other children to also participate in making their own Christmas Card, we can send home the paper on Wed. Oct. 28th  (4am), Thurs. 29th (3am) that is used to make the cards, please return the drawings/creations by Wed. Nov 4th at the latest.  The drawing material should be bright and bold – markers work best.  Just email or text me if you would like paper for your other children.

Thank-you for allowing your kiddos to participate in making these creations.  My son made one when he was in Grade One and my family and friends loved receiving this as our Christmas Card (and I still proudly display it in our home every Christmas!).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me.  This is the first year we have done this fundraiser and I am so excited to see the beautiful artwork our students will create!

Tuesday/Thursday Tidbits

Happy November parents! October was an exciting month in our classroom, and I cannot wait to see all of the fun things we do throughout November. This little class of 3’s is doing amazing things, and I have already seen the children solve so many problems, take turns/share, socialize with their classmates, and build confidence in themselves! Our themes this month will be: Space exploration, Bears (teddy bears, panda bears, polar bears, etc), and the start of Christmas. On November 26th, we will have a class “Pajama Day”, kids always love having a day to wear pjs in school!

At the end of October, I introduced the 3’s to a few new things in our morning circle time now that we are getting comfortable with the routine of school. Each morning, I have the kids check themselves into school using their special attendance name card! I also have a special helper of the day that will help with the calendar and weather watcher. Lymburn school has also recently provided us with access to the gym, and my goal is to make sure we get some fun physical activity in each week!

Our playschool will be participating in a Christmas Card Fundraiser this year. On November 3rd, we will be creating a special Christmas picture that will be made into a Christmas Card. Later in the month, you will receive a sample of this artwork and given the chance to order these cards. They make for a very special card to send out to family and friends, plus some of the proceeds are returned to the playschool.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach out and contact me! I would also like to say a big thank you for all of your support with signing up for the volunteer duties in lieu of toy cleanings and being so flexible throughout the chaos of this crazy year, we truly appreciate our parents!

I would also like to give a warm welcome to our new student, Radek, who officially joined our class on October 27th, we are so excited to have you learn and play with us in playschool Radek!

Dear Parents,

What a great beginning we have had! Already into our second month and the classroom schedules and activities are well underway! The little ones have adjusted nicely with both Ms. Phee and Ms. Chisholm and the teachers can’t thank you enough for the encouragement and making this transition easy on them!!

We have many busy days ahead of us and our amazing teachers look forward to sharing all the fun activities with you. Stay tuned for all the exciting happenings for Spooky-fest!

We are excited to introduce our new Classroom assistant Lisa Madsen; yet another friendly face around the block! She will be helping both teachers once they have settled into the new routine as well as ensure the classroom is cleaned to meet COVID-19 safety standards.

If you have any questions about the program and COVID safety, please send me an email at clcpadmin@callingwoodlymburn.com .

Mon/Wed/Fri News

Happy October!  Can you believe our first month of school is over already?  We are off to a great start.  These amazing preschoolers have had a lot to learn and be responsible for and you should be very proud of them – I know I am!  Thank-you for sending in the craft kits and packing snack for your kiddo each day.  I truly appreciate the adjustments you have had to make (I am sure it is scary to watch your little one walk into a big school by themselves).  We have settled in and are ready for lots of learning, and lots of fun!

October will be an exciting month!  Our themes are Fall, Thanksgiving, Pumpkins and Halloween – doesn’t that sound like fun?  On Friday, October 2nd we will go for a Fall walk around the school yard, collecting leaves and experiencing the season.  Please send your child with appropriate clothing for the weather.  Then on October 9th, please send a large potato with your child.  I know they (and you) will be curious but you will be happy to see the potato at the end of class.  Our next few weeks will see us learning about Pumpkins (and making our class Jack O’Lantern) and getting in the Halloween spirit on Orange and Black day on October 21st.

We will also be starting our Star Student day.  When your child is Star Student, please have them bring in their completed poster and a special item for show and tell each day.  The week before your child is the Star, the poster and instructions will be sent home.  Please check the calendar to see when your child is the Star.

At the end of this month we will have our class Halloween Party.   Please send your child dressed up in their costume .  I am still working out the details of the party, so as it gets closer, look for more info in your weekly email from Jessie.  I promise to take lots of pictures!

As we take this time of the year to reflect on the many things we have to be thankful for, I am truly thankful for the fantastic students and families we have at our playschool.  Have a wonderful thanksgiving!                            Teacher Cathey

Tuesday/Thursday Tidbits

Happy October parents! It is crazy to think that September is over and we have already been in school for two weeks. The 3 year olds are settling in and learning the routines of preschool quickly. It is amazing to watch the transformation of this little class, as each day we accomplish more in our time together! Although we are currently a small class, I can tell that this is going to be a special group of 3’s… your children are so sweet and excited to be at school! So thank you for helping your children prepare for a new adventure and encouraging them every step of the way.

October will be an exciting month in our classroom! First, we will welcome the new month by going on a fall walk on October 1st. Please make sure your child has a jacket this day, but fingers crossed for beautiful fall weather like we’ve been having! Next, we will have a pumpkin decorating day on October 15th. My plan for this day is to have mini pumpkins for the 3’s to decorate. Following pumpkin week, we will get ready for Halloween by wearing orange and/or black on October 20th. On orange and/or black day, we will have a fun filled class focussed on exploring Halloween colours. Next, we will have class picture day on October 27th, bring your best smiles!

Finally, at the end of the month we will have our class Halloween party on Thursday October 29th during our regular class time (9-11:15). This will be such a fun day for the children as we come dressed up in our costumes, create Halloween crafts, play Halloween games, and enjoy some yummy treats! As the date gets closer, Cathey and I will reach out to you with more details about how our Halloween party will run this year.

*Please note that all important dates will be noted on the October calendar for you!

If there is anything I can do to help or questions to answer, to help make your child’s preschool experience the very best it can be, please reach out and let me know!

Message from the CLCP Committee Lead

Hi everyone and welcome to Callingwood-Lymburn Community Playschool (CLCP) for the 2020-2021 school year. I am happy to welcome back returning families and excited to get to know our new families joining CLCP.  This is my third time on the parent committee as my two oldest attended in previous years, and I’m excited to take on the new role as Committee Lead and support the playschool during these uncertain times.  Our Parent Meeting will be held this Monday, September 7th at 7:00 PM in the Callingwood-Lymburn Community Hall, behind Lymburn school, 18740 – 72 Ave. During this meeting we will cover what to expect this year (although this is consistently changing), introduce our phenomenal teachers and parent committee, and cover our Covid plan and procedures.  We will also review and sign up for our updated parent volunteer commitments, so please be sure to bring your calendar and pen.  We ask that only 1 parent per family attend to ensure we meet proper physical distancing requirements.  We look forward to seeing everyone and will do our best to answer any questions you might have during this time.

Looking forward to a wonderful and interesting year!

Thank you,

Lisa Turgeon

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the staff and parent committee of Callingwood-Lymburn Community Playschool as

Our school start dates are September 14th for the Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes with teacher Cathey Chisholm and September 15th for the Tuesday/Thursday classes with teacher Kelsey Phee.

I invite you to share your concerns with any one of us as we embark on this new adventure together!

Message from the Events Coordinator

Hello new and returning families!

My name is Cristy Williams and I will be your Events Coordinator as well as the Media Coordinator for the year. I have 2 children, one of which is in the 3AM class and the other who just finished playschool and is starting kindergarten this year! Events this year will look a little different as we will need to follow the AHS guidelines, and what we will be allowed to do is still being determined. We will do our best to still have some fun events for our children, while keeping them safe!

If you have any questions or want to contact me, you can reach me at clcpevents@callingwoodlymburn.com. See you all soon!

Tuesday/Thursday Tidbits

Welcome to Callingwood-Lymburn Community Playschool! I am beyond excited about the upcoming school year and I look forward to meeting all of you at the parent meeting on Monday September 7th! I recently graduated from the University of Alberta with my Bachelor of Elementary Education degree and I am eagerly awaiting for this new journey to begin in my teaching career. Alongside Teacher Cathey, I have been busy preparing for an exciting year of learning, exploring, creating, and playing at playschool.

The first day of school will be on Tuesday, September 15th. On this day we will have an opportunity to explore the classroom, meet new friends, and become comfortable learning and playing in a brand new environment! Starting playschool can be an emotional experience for both you and your child, but I can assure you it is going to be ok as we walk through this new adventure together. Give your child lots of reassurance that you will only be gone for a short period of time, and before you know it their faces will light up as they enter the classroom confidently and ready to learn so many new things!

To get ready for this school year, there are a few supplies that we are asking each child to bring:

  • Package of 8 markers
  • Package of 8 crayons
  • 1 pair of children’s scissors
  • 1 glue stick

****Please put these items in a ziplock bag labelled with your child’s name. This ziplock bag will remain at school.

  • A water bottle (label with your child’s name)
  • A backpack (label with your child’s name)
  • A change of clothes

*****The backpack, shoes, water bottle and clothes will go home with your child each day.

Thank you for your cooperation in providing these items.

Unfortunately, at this moment the Edmonton Public School Board is not allowing parent volunteers inside the school. Although we are going to miss having our parents volunteers share so many special moments in the classroom, we are hopeful that restrictions will ease in the coming months and we will be able to welcome you back. At the time being, we will ask that you pack your child his/her own snack (preferably in a lunch box) so that during snack time your child will be able to quickly find their snack!

Each month you will receive a classroom calendar. The calendar will highlight important dates (holiday parties, themed days, scholastic book order deadlines, etc). It will also inform you of items that you may need to bring to class. Please review the calendar prior to each month to stay up to date on all of the exciting things that we have planned. Throughout the month of September, we will be looking at the following themes: All About Me, Apples, and Fall!

I will also be sending home a handbook about our class on the first day of school, this will provide you with information about how our classroom will run this year. If you have any questions in regards to the handbook or throughout the year at any point, please do not hesitate to email me- kelsey@callingwoodlymburn.com or set up a meeting! In the midst of everything going on in the world, I know we are going to adjust to this new normal and share so many amazing memories and experiences together!

I look forward to meeting you soon,

Teacher Kelsey

Mon/Wed/Fri News

Happy September!  Welcome to Preschool, and for returning families, welcome back!  We have all been on quite the journey the past few months and things will be different.  However, I cannot tell you how excited I am for this school year!  It is time to get back to exploring, creating, learning, and playing!

The first day of school will be on Monday, September 14th.  We will get to meet our new classmates, catch up with friends from last year, and enjoy the classroom, whether for the first time or playing in the centres they missed.   Our drop off and pick up routines have changed so please make note of the new systems.  We will send you instructions on procedures and all walk through this “new” together.

Thank-you for your cooperation in providing these items.

Each month I will do a classroom calendar… please look at it to see what special things we might be doing each day.  The calendar will include special items to bring to school, or maybe to wear, and also have important dates like classroom parties or when Scholastic Book Orders are due.  This month we will be tackling a bunch of themes:  getting to know the routines of playschool and each other better, plus exploring apples and fall.

I will be sending home a handbook about our class on the first day of school, and, hopefully, this will answer some of your questions.   At anytime during the year, please feel free to connect with me about questions you may have.   Before or after class are good times for quick questions, but if you need more time, I would be happy to set up a meeting (and you can email me anytime – cathey@callingwoodlymburn.com).

Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you soon,

Teacher Cathey
