Callingwood–Lymburn
Community Playschool
February 2020
Message from the Chair
A big thank you to all the families who attended our January parent meeting. It’s always such a pleasure to see everyone!
As we enter the beginning of the second semester, please remember how important it is to arrive on time for your helper days. Parent helpers are required to arrive 15 minutes prior to class start time. This time is important to help set up the classroom and also to ensure that our teachers have the coverage they need for the day. If you are arriving late please call or text the playschool phone to let the teachers know. In the event that helpers arrive past the scheduled class start time in some cases teachers will have no choice but to cancel class and your helper deposit will be cashed.
If you are interested in registering your child in CLCP for the 2020/2021 school year, please do so as soon as possible as registrations are now open to the public (as of January 23, 2020). If you know of anyone who has a child who has recently turned 3 or 4 and would enjoy our program, please refer them to our Registrar, Michelangelo.

Hi Playschool families!
Although this is our February newsletter, that means our March family dance and silent auction will be here before you know it!
For those of you that are returning families, you already know all about this fun family event, and for new families it’s definitely not something you want to miss. The DJ is booked, great items have already been donated and soon it will be time to invite your friends & buy your tickets! The event will take place on Friday, March 6th and in a couple of weeks your class rep will hand out invitations with all of the details. You’ll be able to pre-order the right number of tickets and snacks so that your friends and family all have a great night. Please be sure to drop off any donations into the box at the front of the class and don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions regarding the event.
If you signed up for a volunteer shift, I will be sending you a separate email outlining your volunteer duties.
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on the dance floor!

Hello Everyone,
It’s been a great start to the year!
The Family Dance and silent auction are fast approaching. I hope you are as excited as I am. March 6th will be a lot of fun! We have some great donations already like passes to the art gallery and the Royal Alberta Museum. If I could ask our playschool parents to take a minute to ask their employers, family or friends to help find items for the auction that be much appreciated. If you need a hard copy of the letter there are copies on the mailboxes.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I can’t wait see you all March 6th.
Thank you,
Jessica

M/W/F News
Hello and Happy February!
February is one of my favourite months…I love teaching about friendship, kindness and family! So get ready for a month of fun, special memories and lots of hearts!
We will go on our second field trip this month. On Wednesday, Feb. 5th we will meet at the John Janzen Nature Centre and enjoy a puppet show (“Little Red Riding Hood”), a special teaching time and play time in the Tegler Discovery Zone. The morning class will meet from 9:30-11:30am, and the afternoon class will meet at from 12:30-2:30pm.
On Friday, February 7th, I will be providing the children with 5 cut out hearts (“Heartfelt Helpers”) to take home. When your child helps out around the house (ex/ making their bed, feeding a pet, setting the table, helping out with younger siblings, etc.), you can print their accomplishment on the heart along with their name. They can then bring the heart back to school and put it on our “Heartfelt Helpers” tree. Parents, make sure you come and have a peek at the display to see all of the children’s wonderful accomplishments.
Our Valentine’s Party will be on Friday, February 14th during regular class times. Please have your child dress in red or pink. I will be sending home a class list very soon so the children can start making their valentines at home (if you wish to participate). This is such a fun day!
“Star of the Week” continues this month. Thanks to the children for being so patient and waiting their turn. Please check the calendar for your child’s week.
Happy Family Day on Monday, February 17th! Please remember there is no school on that day. I hope you are able to enjoy time with your family. We will continue the family theme the rest of the week. If you could help by sending a picture of your family for Wednesday, Feb. 19th, that would be great (the picture will be returned at the end of class). Please note that we follow the Edmonton Public School calendar and there will be no school on Friday, February 28th for Teacher’s Convention.
Have a wonderful month!
Teacher Cathey
Looking Ahead:
March 6 Family Dance
March 13 Field Trip to Sweet Pea Café
March 23-27 Spring Break
Tuesday/Thursday Tidbits
February is a short month! As well as having fewer days, we have fewer classes this month because of Family Day/EPSB PD Day and Teachers’ Convention.
We will be taking our second field trip to explore the Marine Life exhibit and see the Sea Lion presentation at West Edmonton Mall. Make sure you look at the calendar!
Welcome to a new family and new friend this month in our morning class! Christian will be joining us, he just turned three years old. All month our theme will be “kindness and caring” and we can practice by getting to know our new friend and showing him and his family what a fun and diverse community we are. We are going to be talking about how to care for our friends and our family members, how to notice how someone else is feeling, and thinking about what we can each do to help someone else feel cared for (some people call this “empathy”). You can help to reinforce these concepts by asking your learners to look at someone’s face, or look at how they are standing or moving – do they look happy? or sad? or scared? Help your kids to come up with actions they can take to help someone feel better, or make someone feel happy, or less scared.
I will be sending you home with a paper copy of all of the students’ names in your classes in case you would like to bring valentines, we will be making special bags to collect cards or treats. If your child is not at school on Tuesday, February 11, I will make them a bag so that everyone has one. If you can, wear pink/red/purple on Valentines Week (the 11th and 13th)!
By then end of February, we will be looking forward to partying together at the Annual Family Dance and Auction on March the 6th!
Looking forward to a great month … even if it is too short!
Teacher Lisa
